Marcus Stadler Environmental Consultant
- Expert for EMAS and ISO environmental management systems
Marcus Stadler is an environmental manager and sustainability & ecomanagement consultant.
He is a specialist for eco-efficiency in events and fairs and an expert for EMAS & ISO systems.
Marcus Stadler is one of the initiators of the call for the promotion of a climate-neutral and sustainable eventindustry, along with Stefan Lohmann and the Association of Event Organisations (VDVO) and the Federal Association for Sustainable Business.
Making an event sustainable is not more difficult and not necessarily more expensive, which is still widely accepted.
Because a high consumption of resources means increased costs. For example, the structural implementation of an exhibition stand that relies on the purchase of new materials and the construction of new cost-intensive design elements with subsequent disposal is more expensive than sustainable design solutions that are produced with environmentally friendly rental materials and can be reused several times.
Similarly, a simple and conventional solution that induces high energy consumption cannot be "cheaper" than a modern energy-efficient solution that saves many resources.
But the problem is that the market and its value chains are currently still too strongly oriented towards one-time use with subsequent disposal. It is important to take an honest look at this, because the question is always who bears which costs.
In the event industry, the costs of environmental degradation, greenhouse gas emissions, energy waste and waste generation are passed on to society.

"To be able to offer a sustainable service, you have to put the entire supply chain to the test. I see a particular need for action with stage and special structures. These are usually disposed of after the event, but not always properly. I see a lot of potential here to make events more sustainable.
I see sustainability as part of corporate responsibility. The term sustainability encompasses not only the ecological aspects, but also all the social aspects that are needed to be prepared for the future.
That means: I don't just ask about energy efficiency and resource conservation, but also: How are the employees doing? Does a company treat them with respect? Are the issues of equality, inclusion and diversity taken into account? Are employees sufficiently involved in decision-making processes? How is the interaction with suppliers?"
Basically:
The client determines the product, the solution lies in the request! You can enhance every event with your own guideline in the sense of the UN Guideline for Sustainable Events. This is where it is defined:
"A sustainable event is one designed, organised and implemented in a way that minimizes potential negative impacts and leaves a beneficial legacy for the host community and all involved".
It is important to work towards this idea at all process levels. From the client's side, clear specifications on sustainability are needed at the very beginning of the project. So that sustainable solutions are increasingly demanded and offered. If you think about this at the beginning of the planning, you will avoid additional work and costs in the end.
